Child Development - Tuition Based Services - Mission Head Start

Child Development (continued from front page)

Observations are led by culturally competent mental health specialists who assist teaching staff to implement appropriate developmental practices in the classroom.

All children in the program receive developmental screenings and ongoing assessments by the teachers to measure and monitor children’s progress in meeting their developmental and educational goals. We conduct parent/teacher conferences three times per year, in which we review assessment outcomes. Curriculum is individualized based on these assessments.

Our teachers are trained in and implement The Creative Curriculum for Preschool, a nationally recognized play-based curriculum designed to help children acquire social competence and skills needed to succeed as learners. Our curriculum also includes Fletcher’s Place, a program in which children expand their English vocabulary and learn emergent literacy skills to help prepare them for kindergarten. To assist children in acquiring early literacy skills in a developmentally appropriate manner, students connect sound to symbol and symbol to sound, using sound movement as a physical anchor between the letter, sound and shape.

Mission Head Start (continued from front page)

Mission Neighborhood Centers has been a delegate agency for the San Francisco State University Head Start/Early Head Start program since 1969. We currently provide Head Start services to 380 economically disadvantaged children and their families.

Currently, 85% of the families served by the Mission Head Start program are recent US immigrant families whose primary language is Spanish. MNC’s Child Development Services program provides a bilingual curriculum in which children continue to build their native language, while acquiring English as a second language. Our teachers are trained in techniques to promote early literacy in English language learners.

At Mission Head Start, we engage parents in their children’s learning and help them make progress toward their educational, literacy and employment goals. Significant emphasis is placed on the involvement of parents in the administration of local Head Start programs.
